The Varmint rifle features a heavy 26 barrel with free floating action, Picatinny rail on receiver for optics, oversize bolt knob, brown laminated buttstock with a SuperCell recoil pad, brown laminated buttstock, and a Crossfire Adjustable Trigger from Remington Arms. The new rifle features a True Timber Strata finished AccuFit synthetic stock, detachable magazine, free-floating barrel, spiral fluted hammerguard, and a coyote hammerstock, receiver, and bolt handle. The new rifle uses forged uppers and lowers with 16 barrels, adjustable stocks, and M-LOK-compatible handguards. The rifle comes with one of Wilsons QD Sling Swivel slots mounted to the left of the handguard, and an aluminum rail two inches long mounted to the bottom, which can be used to attach a bipod, vertical grip, handguard, or other accessories. The rifle comes with one of Wilsons QD sling swivel sockets mounted on the left side of the handguard as well as a two-inch section of aluminum rail mounted on the underside for a bipod, vertical grip, hand stop or other accessory. The 12.6-long, eight-corner unit features full-length Picatinny rails in place at 12 oclock, with no less than five M-Lok-compatible slots in each of the remaining seven sides; the standard equipment for left-handed Defender series ARs is four accessory rails, as well as QD mounts to be used in conjunction with the handguard. The barrel is free-floating within the 12.5-inch Wilson Combat aluminum handguard, which has 45-degree M-Lok mounting slots around it, and has full-length MIL STD 1913 rail at the top.
While the left-handed version of the Protector series AR is also offered, the pistol-style version I shot during the hog hunt (and a sample used for later tests) was the carbinet, which has a 16.25-inch stainless steel barrel with a medium-length gas system. Back at the range, shooting three loads from Wilson Combat (including one used with much success against pigs), the Protector, chambered in.300 HAMR, proved highly accurate and 100% reliable. When I heard Wilson Combat had introduced a version of their Protector series AR rifle in the left-hand configuration, and that I would get a chance to go out on Bill Wilsons private ranch for an in-field test of a new.300 HAMR-chambered variant of the carbines against some of Texass abundant wild hogs, I was excited in four ways. No one single firearm can be the ultimate for every scenario, but Wilson Combats Protector Series AR Carbine, chambered in its new chambering, is an excellent choice for a good number of them – from domestic defense to taking every North American game.

Called Completed and Ready for Competition by Savage Arms, the Marshall features 22.5″ stainless steel barrels with 5-R button stocks, 18-inch Arca rails, a Magpul PRS buttstock, and adjustable gas systems. The Defender features a match-grade, stainless steel, button-rifled, 16-inch barrel in an Armor-Tuff finish. This gun features a 7 barrel, an A2 flash hider, a MagPul MOE grip, buffer tubes with foam pads, 6-way M-Lok rail, and a 30-+1 capability.
Its new Lima M-LOK pistol is chambered in 5.56 NATO and features a 7.5 barrel, A2 flash hider, forged 7075-T6 upper and lower, 6.5-inch handguard with M-LOK mounting points, and pistol-receiver extender with a foam cover. This lever-action pistol has a free-floating 22-gauge steel barrel, a 6-lug Chrome-plated bolt, removable 4-round box magazine, and an attractive American-walnut stock. Most of my other AR-15 guns with quality matching barrels are well below the 1.5-inch grouping limit at 100 yards, and they would easily hold up against my 6-iron targets from 100 yards away. The AR 15 pistol is the handgun variant of the AR-15 rifle platform, featuring a shorter 16-inch barrel.

With a reamer in hand, Bill Wilsons started testing in order to optimize barrel twist rates, as well as see just how well the new 300 HAMR from Wilson Combat will fare. More than packing though, he intended to provide a worthwhile bump in terminal performance compared with other popular intermediate cartridges like the 6.5mm Grendel, 6.8x43mm Rem SPC, and the 7.62x39mm. The old saying it is the shooter, not the gun is true, but the thing is, the excellent trigger in the Protector and the smooth recoil from its medium-length gas system allowed me to get to my rifles potential and out-shoot all but one of the guys.
